The community bonspiel Curl for Cancer to raise funds for support of cancer facilities and research in New Brunswick was held at the SCC on Saturday February 4th, which, this year, was World Cancer Day. As usual, there was great entertainment, great costumes, great fun and prizes donated by local businesses. Oh and also some curling going on. Curl for Cancer had 28 teams entered and raised about $14,000. Guest speaker was Erin Curwin.
Numbers in Little Rocks are up this year and the group is very active. Eight players participated in the Ice Halo Funspiel in Moncton in January and Chichi, age 6, one of our new Sackville curlers, won the hot shots competition for the half icers. On February 18th, SCC hosted Little Rocks from as far away as Hampton for our third annual one day Funspiel.
The annual Cumberland Honda Men's Open Bonspiel was held this year on February 10,11,12 with ten teams entered, all members of the SCC. There was no all over championship team. Each team played four games and each win was worth $30 to the team. Lunchtime soup and sandwiches were available at a reasonable cost. Thanks to Nancy Oulton and her helpers for looking after the food. The event was a great success - thanks to Ken Nicol for his organization.
Happy Hearts, normally scheduled for the Wednesday preceding February 14th, ran into a little problem with Old Man Winter this year and had to reschedule from February 8th to February 15th. In spite of the change nine teams from outside the club came to play and three teams of Sackville ladies filled in. The bonspiel was the usual success with lots of good curling, good food and friendly faces.
